The Mirror-Eyed Gazer
The Mirror-Eyed Gazer is one of six women in a play called The Cagebirds. They are locked in a cage, each spellbound by their own narrow and trivial concerns and unable to remember anything but a few cherished snippets of the world outside. The Mirror-Eyed Gazer is absorbed by her own thoughts. She regularly looks at herself in the mirror and is constantly preening herself. She moves about a lot, talks over others, and is obsessed with her looks. Her dialogue reveals this obsession.
I designed and made the costume and designed the fabric for her kimono costume. I was inspired by the feathers of a peacock which a bird whose personality seems to reflect the self-obsessed personality of The Mirror-Eyed Gazer . My fabric design was printed onto Duchess Satin by Prinfab a commercial fabric printer. I hand made the mask worn by my character which was inspired by the Peacock Butterfly.
